The next addition to our UG Silver Series in Indianapolis is the Golf Club of Indiana. This course was designed by Mickey Powell and Charles Maddox in 1974. The course used to host "The Classic", a charity golf tournament that the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Gary Player played in.
The course is located just northwest of Indianapolis and is a 20-minute drive from downtown (19 miles straight up I-65).
The average rating across multiple sites (Google, GolfPass, GolfNow, etc.) is 4.2 stars. Some of the recurring themes from the reviews include the shape of the course, the staff, and the pace. I was hard-pressed to find any negative reviews on the condition of the course. Everything points to this course being in fantastic shape. There are also plenty of reviews pointing to this course having great practice facilities with The Golf Pro-Formance Academy located on the far side of the range.
There was one main issue that kept popping up for this course, pace of play. There are many courses like this around the Louisville area as well, but tee times 8 minutes apart are tough. When deciding the spread of tee times, you need to look at price and customer satisfaction. The further apart the tee times, the more the cost, but better customer satisfaction. The less spread out the tee times are, the cheaper they can be, but this comes at a cost of pace. The value here is great but some may argue they need to bump up the prices and spread out the tee times a bit more.
I have researched plenty of courses and read a lot of reviews, but I have never seen so many people rave about the friendliness of the staff! Between individual experiences and corporate outings, the staff truly shines. Also shoutout to the assistant pro, Gabi, for going above and beyond your duties in shipping out lost clothing!
This is a course that NEEDS to be on the list when visiting Indianapolis! Just expect it to be crowded during peak in-season times.
